Resolutions Checkpoint 2015: May

Resolutions Checkpoint 2015 May

Hello, June!

As evident in my recent picture-heavy posts, I haven't been writing much the past month. And for those just tuning in, that's because I'm currently in Montpellier, France for a limited amount of time (two months, and my time is half up already), trying to learn as much French as possible.

So here's a quick recap of the progress I made this past month on the goals I'd set in May, to work towards my 2015 resolutions:

May Progress

1. Reach a high intermediate level of French.
  • Go to at least two language exchanges a week.
    • Done, and some weeks I went to three!
  • Do one page from my French grammar book every morning.
    • Hasn't been every morning, but think I've definitely done more than 30 pages in total, since I'll do several at a time. I'll count 'em next month (I date every page when I complete it).
  • Read one chapter of "James and the Giant Peach" a day (they're really short chapters)
    • Hasn't been one a day, but I'm currently on chapter 23 (pg 107/175).
  • Watch a French movie a week (at least), and two TV episodes (at least).
    • I haven't been doing a movie a week, but I've already made it to Season 4 of "Un village français" (28 episodes), and have watched 7 episodes of "Fais pas ci fais pas ça," so I'm often watching two episodes a day.
  • Remind myself to be bold
    • Have been constantly pushing myself out of my comfort zone, and am proud of how I've spent my time this past month. Notably going to the OVS events, ultimate (Couchsurfing event), and talking with strangers in the park.

2. Diversify my income to three sources.
  • This stuff would require English, so I'm really just focusing on French for the next two months, plus my editing job.

3. Eat a whole foods, plant-based diet; improve digestion.
  • Buy veggies from the market down the block.
    • Bought from a different market after FISE. Otherwise I've still been buying my veggies from Carrefour, whoops.
  • Eat 80% plants.
  • Don't buy things I know I shouldn't eat!
    • A new environment helps so much with this one. When you don't buy it, it's not in the house, thus you don't eat it! I've been making lots of things with cucumber, tomato, mixed greens, and red/green pepper; and snacking on bananas, carrots, green beans.

And briefly, here's what I'll work on in June:

June Focus

1. Reach a high intermediate level of French.
  • Go to at least 2 language exchanges a week.
  • Do one page from my French grammar book every day.
  • Finish reading "James and the Giant Peach" by June 15.
  • Fully dissect at least one article a week from the Montpellier Gazette (local newspaper). - I usually skim or read for comprehension, but dissecting would entail looking up all unknown words and analyzing the grammar used.
  • In addition to regular Netflix watching ("Un village français," "Fais pas ci fais pas ça"), watch the news online at least twice a week. (Practice pronunciation/comprehension)
  • Do one review session on FluentU every day.

2. Diversify my income to three sources.
  • Still just focused on my editing job this month as far as income, and all the rest of my time should be spent with French.

3. Eat a whole foods, plant-based diet; improve digestion.
  • Keep aiming to eat 80% plants.

At the end of June, we'll be halfway through the year already!

Have you made any progress on a resolution? Want to make a resolution for the second half of the year? I'd love to hear about it!

  2. I don't have such itemized goals as yours are, but I have recently given myself a deadline (Sept 1) to finish a larger composition project. So I'm chipping away at that steadily, and will continue throughout the summer months!

    1. That sounds good, breaking it into small parts. (Is this the egg project, or something else?)
Do you kind of have an idea how far you want to get with it each week, or are you just constantly working on it?
